Long ago the Takitimu waka was built and made ready for its journey across the Pacific Ocean from Hawaiiki to Aotearoa. As part of these preparations the Tohunga asked various atua for assistance, the taniwha of the sea, the dolphins, whales, octopus and squid were asked to guide the waka and provide a safe journey for the people. Hinekorako, the moon maiden would guarantee the people successful fishing for the essential food supplies required during their long voyage. Tawhirimatea was requested to provide good weather for the waka and its intrepid travellers on their voyage to Aotearoa.
